Pawleys Island, SC, as seen on bumper stickers, signs, brochures; the locals call it “Arrogantly Shabby”. It is laid back and relaxing to say the least.
This unique barrier island on South Carolina’s northern coast is home to few and a second home or vacation home to many.
It is located 25 miles south of Myrtle Beach, SC and 70 miles north of Charleston, SC. It is approximately 3.5 miles long and is as narrow as one house. That’s right, as narrow as one house. There is the ocean, a house, the road and the marsh.
In the early 1700s Pawleys Island was used as a May to November get a way for owners of the rice plantations. They moved families, livestock, furniture and provision to the island for health reasons. While they did not know about malaria, they did know that it was unhealthy to stay on the plantations along the rivers in the summertime.
People today are still doing the same thing. They are coming to Pawleys Island for health reasons. They are not coming to avoid malaria, but to get away from today’s fast paced, stressful world to relax, to rejuvenate and to enjoy themselves.
In addition to the beautiful beaches, there are excellent restaurants, outstanding golf courses, unique local shops and opportunities to fish. Great times families to have fun and to create memories for a lifetime and beyond.
So for those people who are looking for a unique, special place for your next vacation or for investing in real estate, consider Pawleys Island, SC.
Many people return each year to enjoy this “arrogantly shabby” barrier island which has one condominium complex, one twenty room inn, one eight bedroom bed and breakfast and a number of beach homes.
Laid back? Yes. The speed limit on Pawleys Island is 25 mph.
